(Oxford Dictionary).\u00a0 This is more of an idea than an action though.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can ideas be measured?\u00a0 Ideas don&#8217;t have anything empirical that can readily to measured.\u00a0 Counting how many times something has power or influence over another is hopeless without first understanding what power or influence might mean.\u00a0 The parts of power and influence might be measurable but how do we measure those?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Something we can measure, can be changed.\u00a0 Pasta can be measured; to much, you take some away; not enough, you add.\u00a0 A dog sits, count the number of sits.\u00a0 Apply some training, and the dog sits more or less often; change is achieved.\u00a0 What behaviours are said to denote power or influence in dogs?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Behaviours are often associated with a dominant dog:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Jumping up<\/li>\n<li>humping<\/li>\n<li>guarding a toy\/food\/person\/spot etc<\/li>\n<li>demanding (affection\/attention)<\/li>\n<li>etc (some lists are extensive and label everything a dog does as dominant)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All these behaviours can be measured and changed.\u00a0 Dogs do what works.\u00a0 Dogs will not waste energy on behaviours that are ineffective at achieving a goal (goals = getting\/keeping good things or avoiding bad things).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Jumping<\/strong> <strong>up<\/strong> is a pro-social behaviour; something puppies do for greeting or for getting food (out of mothers mouth combined with licking the dams lips to make her regurgitate).\u00a0 Puppies couldn&#8217;t be dominant over a dam any more than a baby is dominant while breast feeding.\u00a0 <strong><em>Training<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; Jumping up can be mitigated by waiting for more human centric appropriate behaviour and rewarding that &#8212; &#8220;<em>better to sit and not jump and getting food\/attention than waste energy on jumping up and getting nothing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Humping<\/strong> is a <a title=\"dominant dog or misfiring instinct?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.humortrend.com\/humor\/worst-photos-of-inappropriate-dog-humping-19-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\">misfiring sexual instinct<\/a> (inappropriate timing or stimulation).\u00a0 Dogs are not dominating each other.\u00a0 <em><strong>Training &#8211; <\/strong><\/em> a good &#8220;off&#8221; or redirection usually works -humping is usually fun for humpers so the redirect must be stronger than the humping.\u00a0 For an avid humper, this may take time.\u00a0 &#8220;<em>I&#8217;d rather come and get a tasty cookie than hump this lab!&#8221; [ed. Labs seem to be very hump worthy]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Guarding<\/strong> <strong>resources<\/strong> is necessary for wild canine survival &#8211; ie. another (probably misfiring) instinct.\u00a0 Something we discourage in our dogs &#8212; humans don&#8217;t like sharp teeth pointed at them.\u00a0 <em><strong>Training<\/strong> &#8211; <\/em>approaching a guarding dog and providing better stuff can change the guarding to anticipation [ed. <em>Mine!<\/em> by<a href=\"http:\/\/academyfordogtrainers.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Jean Donaldson<\/a> is an excellent resource]. <em>&#8220;Oh Boy, here they come again with bonus cookies while I have my bone again, I love it when they do that!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Demanding<\/strong> <strong>attention\/affection.<\/strong>\u00a0 Dogs are social animals.\u00a0 Social animals seek attention and affection &#8211; being pushy about it merely means the behaviour has worked in the past.\u00a0 <em><strong>Training<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; wait for a lull in the pushy behaviour then reward for a lack of pushiness.\u00a0 Increase duration before rewarding, or reward when there is no demanding.\u00a0<em> &#8220;if I pester, I get nothing; if I wait, or don&#8217;t push, I get attention.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Each dominant behaviour associated with a &#8220;dominant dog&#8221; can be dissected in this way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let me assume for a moment that I am incorrect in my argument and that there is such a thing as a dominant dog.\u00a0 Living with this dog, I have the ability to stop feeding; stop watering; stop providing shelter; stop the ability for reproduction; stop social interaction with other dogs; even take life from the dominant dog.\u00a0 Who is dominant?\u00a0 That the dog is, or could be dominant in this situation is spurious.\u00a0 Perhaps a better question is why do we ascribe the &#8216;dominant dog&#8217; label?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Human culture abounds with dominant humans.\u00a0 We have clear social hierarchies extending well beyond family bounds.\u00a0 Organizations of commerce and the military have clear order;\u00a0 who is on top; who is on bottom.\u00a0 Humans project these structures to other animals because they make sense to us even when there is clear evidence to the contrary.\u00a0 Dogs only spend energy continuing strategies that get them stuff, or keep away pain (and injury).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That all the behaviours of a &#8216;dominant dog&#8217; are modifiable without force or intimidation, suggests that even if geared toward a dominant goal, dogs would rather spend their energy not being dominant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People say all the time &#8220;My Dog is Dominant!&#8221;\u00a0 But what do they mean by dominant dog?\u00a0 Lets get a definition first.\u00a0 Dominant = Having power or influence over others.
